On Sept. 30, in celebration of the 3rd anniversary of the establishment of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, a special exhibition opened at the Hainan Library, showcasing the mountains, forests, and people of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park through photos, videos, physical displays, and other formats. The exhibition tells the story of how the park was created, and offers visitors a chance to explore the park’s concept and culture.
The incredible beauty and biodiversity of Hainan’s tropical rainforest is shown through a wide variety of formats, including the many mushrooms that thrive throughout the region and the flagship species of the Hainan rainforest, the Hainan Gibbon. Visitors will discover the culture of the rainforest and the ecological concept of harmonious coexistence practiced by the locals, such as the Li and Miao peoples. The exhibition shows how long-term rainforest residents chose to move out of the mountains to protect the delicate ecological environment, exploring a development path that allowed them to remain in the area and improve their economic conditions. The role of technology in the park is also explored, highlighting the smart rainforest management platform, the integrated sky-ground monitoring system, and the ways in which technology can give rainforest protection wings with which to fly. Visitors will learn about how the park inspires global ecological protection, discover the “Chinese Wisdom, Hainan Plan, Bawangling Model”, and see how the case study of the Hainan Gibbon is informing conservation efforts around the world. The exhibition provides a comprehensive, multi-dimensional overview of the important progress and excellent results achieved in the three years since the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park was established.
Since the park was established, forestry workers have performed innovative work including taking the lead in carrying out GEP (Gross Ecosystem Product) accounting within the park, becoming China’s first national park to publish GEP results. This was also the first national park to complete natural resource rights registration, clearly defining the ownership of different types of natural resources. The park strictly implements management and protection responsibilities through a patrol system and an all-weather ‘electronic fence’ monitoring and protection network. In addition, staff have prepared ecosystem restoration, demonstration area development, and comprehensive restoration plans. The Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park has already made several notable achievements. Since 2019, a total of 75 new species have been observed in the park, and the population of the flagship rainforest species, the Hainan Gibbon, has increased to 42 individuals living in seven family groups.
In the future, the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park will continue to set up and improve systems for the protection and utilization of the tropical rainforest and deepen exploration of the area’s unique ecological, scientific research, and pop science value. More conservation experiences and development models that can be replicated and popularized will be researched, developing a ‘Hainan Model’ for China’s national parks to follow and displaying the fruitful results of China’s national park development and biodiversity construction on a global stage.
The rainforest park themed exhibition will last from Sept. 30 to Oct. 24. During the National Day holiday, the Hainan Library hours are: 9:00-13:00 from October 1 to October 3 and 9:00-17:00 from October 4 to October 7. After the holiday, the library will return to the regular schedule: 9:00 to 20:30 from Thursday to Saturday and from 9:00 to 12:00 on Friday. The exhibition
